Default Protein

What are your favorite sources for protein? I'm mainly interested in "normal" foods. I just can't get excited about tofu.

First off, most Americans get tons more protein than they need. You can get by on a lot less.

Second, there are lots of good sources for vegetarian protein. Unrefined grains have a lot--wheat, rice, barley, and try quinoa, spelt and amaranth for variety (they're awesome). Beans are also great. It is a myth that you have to combine foods and make a "complete protein," but try to get as many different sources as possible to cover all of your essential amino acids. Eggs and milk are great sources of protein if you choose to eat them, but they aren't necessary. Veggies are good too. Broccoli gets 40% of its calories from protein.

I would say that as long as you're not living on junk food, you'll be fine on the protein front.

That's good to know.

While I don't think eating meat is bad I don't like red meats or fish at all. I don't mind chicken, turkey or eggs but I seriously had to talk myself into liking them. Last week I went several days (maybe the whole week) with very little protein. I didn't really realize it until I started feeling really sick. I serioulsy started craving foods I totally hate and I know it was because my body needed protein. I felt fine after a day or two of eating healthier.

My mom says she is surprised how in tune I am to what foods my body needs. It feels so obvious to me... is it to you guys? Do you notice a change in how you feel when you don't eat well and do you crave the foods you need? I'm not just talking about protein.

Yap I agree. If I go three days without a piece of chocolate my sweet tooth starts to yell at me. haha. My body DEFINENTLY feels good when I have very little grease and fattening agents in my diet. I get way more energy when I eat healthy. If I dont I feel run down and tired.

My mom always serves as a fish dish whether it's miso soup, fried and even grilled. It's a great source of protein. We seldom eat meat and pork dishes.

We are not big pork eaters. Its such a delicious meat, but its sooooo bad for your body.
